    Halloween recipe: Churros

    by  • October 30, 2013 • One Perfect Thing • 0 Comments

This recipe is perfect for a chilly Autumn night,  so why not bake a batch this Halloween and hunker down indoors to take refuge from the ghouls, ghosts and blustery weather. Alternatively, if you’re feeling incredibly generous, you could offer them to any to any trick-or-treaters that come to call, but only if you’re sure you want to share them…

Churros recipe | Autumn | Recipes | The Relaxed Home

    Serves 6 or 8

    125g salted butter in cubes
    150g plain white flour, sifted
15g caster sugar or vanilla sugar
    6 medium eggs, beaten
    Virgin olive oil, for frying
Sieved icing sugar and a little cinnamon (optional) to decorate

Step 1) Heat 250ml boiling water with the butter in a deep, heavy-based saucepan for 2 minutes, uncovered, until the mixture boils, then tip in the sifted flour and sugar and beat hard over the heat for 30 seconds until it clumps together. Remove and cool for 2 minutes in a sink of cold water.

Step 2) With an electric, hand-held whisk, whisk in the eggs one at a time; the mixture thins, then gets thick again. Once all 6 eggs are added, spoon the mix into a piping bag with a rosette nozzle and chill for 30 minutes.

Step 3) Heat 10cm oil in a medium heavy-based pan until a cube of stale bread browns in 20 seconds. Pipe straight or curly shapes of paste into the oil with one hand and chop off the paste using scissors with the other. Cook for 1 minute, then turn with tongs, cook for 1 minute more and drain. Serve, dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon if liked, with hot chocolate.

Baking accessories | Great british Bake Off | The Relaxed Home

The nights are drawing in, The Great British Bake Off has finished for another year and the stormy weather is making us all feel a little bit like we’d like to hibernate. So I think we are all collectively in need of a hug. My advice to you would be to don this cheerful little apron and bake yourself a nice comforting apple crumble. Then share it around amongst your friends and family, dispensing warmth, happiness and sugar. There, does the world seem a little brighter now?

Love this: Super cute penguin cushions

    by  • October 28, 2013 • One Perfect Thing • 0 Comments

This winter i’m pleased to see the humble penguin making a foray into home accessories. I was first alerted to this trend via Daily Decorum who were first to spot the little creature’s style potential. And now i’m slightly obsessed. Did you know that penguins are such social creatures that families will return to the same nesting grounds for thousands of years. And male penguins will go without food for two whole months while they look after their unhatched chicks? All very admirable traits, which is why i’m inviting a penguin into my home this Christmas. Oh and they totally rock the monochrome trend too.
